The Campus Martius plan by G.B. Piranesi, drawn in 1761, is more of a fantasy recreation than a map of this important area of ancient Rome. It brilliantly blends reality and fiction. Piazzas, parks, and buildings are depicted as complex architectural schemes that are emerging, some of which are based on historical and archeological documents and many of which are the product of the artist's crazy imagination.
Since its creation more than 250 years ago, this daring reproduction and Piranesi's superb etching have been the focus of scholarly analysis and discussion.
