Our illustrations show the Cape Henry Lighthouse, which is located where the Jamestown colony landed in Virginia's Chesapeake Bay. It was built during George Washington's presidency, who helped choose the first ever keeper of the light house. It served as a compass for ships in the bay until 1878. In the same year, the United States Lighthouse Board produced these drawings, which depict the exterior as well as a cross-section of the stairs used by a century's worth of light house keepers. They are skillfully rendered in deep and aqua blues on archival paper.
